How Creative: App Connections

Explore these great apps as we continue through How Creative!

Summer Camp is for parents and kids to work together, exploring the world around you with activities that will take you outside, inside, and as far as your imagination will go! Learn more by reading the Welcome to KinderTown Summer Camp! blog post.

One of the great educational benefits of the iPad is the ability to spark creativity! Check out these 3 apps with your kids to get the imagination rolling.

Toca Builders

Read KinderTown's review of Toca Builders.

Welcome your preschooler to their own block-building world. This app is intuitive for young children to use and is open-ended, so their creativity can take control. Toca Builders is a virtual 3D playground where kids can use characters to build and create their own unique world. Each character has a different way of creating in the virtual world. For example, Jum-Jum loves to spray paint, a favorite of our child testers, and Connie is able to lift and move blocks. Your child can create several different play-based worlds within the app to add to or adapt later. There are not any words or dialog in the app, so sit with your child and discuss the characters and their abilities or perhaps create a story about the characters as your child manipulates their world. Toca Builders feels Minecraft-inspired, but it’s appropriate for children ages 4-8. Children are demonstrating their creative thoughts, as well as their understanding of 3D environments. Be sure to check out their “for parents” section within the app for more ideas. The possibilities are as endless as their imagination in the Toca Builders world.

Draw and Tell HD

Read KinderTown's review of Draw and Tell.

Draw and Tell HD brings the best features of drawing apps into one fabulous art experience. Choose from a blank page, your photos, or one of the app’s backgrounds, and start creating. Tools like crayons, stickers, paint and erasers are used while this app records your child singing, talking, and moving stickers all over the screen. Not feeling up to creating your own picture? Try out the variety of coloring pages where you get to drop paint into the lines to create a vibrant scene. This is another top app from Duck Duck Moose and is $1.99.
