Shiny Things Bakery

Help Alice the Zebra make cookies and cakes for her bakery. Your child will love cracking the eggs into the batter, counting out the milk bottles, and slicing the butter to put into the batter. Next mix it up with a random ingredient including wacky striped pants, a feather, or buttons. Next, decorate the cookies and cakes with virtual icing and share them with Alice and her friends. Be sure to divide the cookies up evenly, or your friends will be upset! The app is $1.99 and appropriate for children ages 3-5.

Duckie Deck Sandwich Chef

Read KinderTown's review of Duckie Deck Sandwich Chef.

Children will love creating virtual sandwiches with Duckie Deck’s Sandwich Chef. The app encourages creativity by developing different artistic creations as sandwiches. Children can be walked through the process of creating a specific sandwich, or design their own. The app is easy enough to use that children can navigate through the app independently. The app is $2.99 and appropriate for children ages 3-5.

WeCookit

Read KinderTown's review of WeCookIt.

WeCookit is a delightful children’s interactive cookbook. The simple layout allows children to choose a category of interest, then a recipe; with a simple swipe to the right, the recipe appears. For example, I choose the Sunshine Egg Rings from the Egg section of the app. Then parents and children can tap the “cook it” button to get started. The app then prompts you with a shopping list, the necessary tools, and step-by-step picture guide to make your recipe. The graphics are great for children, and the recipes are easy enough for young children to cook together with a parent. The app clearly marks where parental help should be gained, but we see this as an app that parents and children should always use together. The app is $2.99 and appropriate for children ages 4-8 with an engaged parent.

Summer Camp is for parents and kids to work together, exploring the world around you with activities that will take you outside, inside, and as far as your imagination will go! Learn more by reading the Welcome to KinderTown Summer Camp! blog post.

Spelling You See® is a curriculum produced by Demme Learning and designed to guide students through the developmental stages of spelling. In the phonetic stage, students learn to associate letters and sounds by writing words. In later stages, students learn to spell commonly-used words by copying interesting passages and “chunking” (color-coding) letter combinations. These activities help students commit the correct spellings of words to memory.

Today, have your elementary-aged campers choose one of these two passages to read: The Transcontinental Railroad or Lalibela

Master Builders Demme Learning Connection

After your camper has read the chosen passage, help him think of a creative way to present the information to the rest of the family, such as:

  • Writing, directing, and presenting a play
  • Performing a dramatic reading of the passage, with props, if desired
  • Creating a slide show for the passage

If you have a younger camper, print out a copy of this activity page.

Master Builders Demme Learning Connection

Then read the passage to the camper and point out the following words:

  • The Transcontinental Railroad: men, spent, six, west, link
  • Lalibela: block, rock, cut, top, hill

Dictate the words for your camper to write in the letter boxes at the bottom of the activity page. (Note how the shaded boxes help with vowel placement.) Then have your camper draw a picture in the box at the top of the page to illustrate the passage.

Pettson’s Inventions

Ropes, pulleys, belts, and gears to combine and play with! My son really loves the challenge offered by this app, and it has quickly become one of his favorites.  I like that it works on problem solving and engineering thinking skills. The app introduces the quirky characters, Pettson and Findus, and they serve as the student’s guide in creating crazy inventions. Each invention challenge involves the use of simple machines. Students must match the pieces up into the correct order to make the machine move and complete a task such as helping the bunny reach the carrots. Each challenge slowly becomes more complex as children understand how each machine part works. A star is earned for every invention that is completed correctly. There is also a “versus” section where two children can challenge each other to complete the task as a timer ticks away. In the settings section, you can increase or decrease the level of difficulty. Children will love this introduction to how simple machines work together. Pettson’s Inventions Deluxe is $2.99 and appropriate for children ages 6-8.

Read KinderTown's review of Word Wizard

Word Wizard

Word Wizard is a Talking Movable Alphabet that uses app technology to enhance traditional writing and spelling activities. Children write sentences and spelling words while Word Wizard helps by saying the sounds of each letter as they are dragged onto the page. After each word is built, Word Wizard speaks the word as it is spelled and highlights it in red if it is spelled in a non-traditional way or in white if it has the correct spelling. Colorful, animated sensory activities provide a refreshing break between spelling lists and have a set time limit that brings the user back to practicing. Word Wizard has a lot of user options, such as 1400 words in a variety of word lists and space for adults to create custom lists for their children. Word Wizard is $2.99 and appropriate for children ages 4-8.

One of the great educational benefits of the iPad is the ability to spark creativity! Check out these 3 apps with your kids to get the imagination rolling.

Toca Builders

Read KinderTown's review of Toca Builders.

Welcome your preschooler to their own block-building world. This app is intuitive for young children to use and is open-ended, so their creativity can take control. Toca Builders is a virtual 3D playground where kids can use characters to build and create their own unique world. Each character has a different way of creating in the virtual world. For example, Jum-Jum loves to spray paint, a favorite of our child testers, and Connie is able to lift and move blocks. Your child can create several different play-based worlds within the app to add to or adapt later. There are not any words or dialog in the app, so sit with your child and discuss the characters and their abilities or perhaps create a story about the characters as your child manipulates their world. Toca Builders feels Minecraft-inspired, but it’s appropriate for children ages 4-8. Children are demonstrating their creative thoughts, as well as their understanding of 3D environments. Be sure to check out their “for parents” section within the app for more ideas. The possibilities are as endless as their imagination in the Toca Builders world.

Draw and Tell HD

Read KinderTown's review of Draw and Tell.

Draw and Tell HD brings the best features of drawing apps into one fabulous art experience. Choose from a blank page, your photos, or one of the app’s backgrounds, and start creating. Tools like crayons, stickers, paint and erasers are used while this app records your child singing, talking, and moving stickers all over the screen. Not feeling up to creating your own picture? Try out the variety of coloring pages where you get to drop paint into the lines to create a vibrant scene. This is another top app from Duck Duck Moose and is $1.99.
